Enrollment for the 2017 Summer Enrichment Courses will be from Monday, May 8 at 5 pm through Friday, May 12 at 3 pm.  
Each child will be able to register for a maximum of 3 courses, as available.

2nd and 3rd Grades A Day with Toad and Frog

June 15

Time: 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.

Annex, Circa 21 Playhouse

Join Mrs. Pratt as you enjoy a morning of cross-curricular activities based around the classic

Arnold Lobel "Frog and Toad" books, and enjoy a trip to the Circa 21 production of "A Year with

Frog and Toad" in the afternoon. Please bring a sack lunch.

 

3rd, 4th, 5th Grades Get Your Hands On Science!

June 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

9 - 10 a.m.

Annex Foyer

Students will explore 5 different hands-on science related themes each day.

Monday: Polishing Pennies - exploring chemical change

Tuesday: Sink or Float - exploring liquids & solids

Wednesday: Feel the Force- exploring gravity

Thursday: Elastic Air - exploring air

Friday: Bridges, Towers, & Eggs - exploring engineering

 

3rd, 4th, 5th Grades Can I Have Another Helping of Math, Please?

June 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

5th - 8th Grade Art Class

June 5, 6, 7, 8

9:30 - 11a.m.

Middle School Art Room

Join Mrs. Achs for a time to be creative artists. Students will work with watercolors and collage,

go retro with 0’s style string art on wood blocks, paint a painting, and other smaller projects

using materials in creative ways of their choice.

 

5th - 6th, 7th - 8th Grade IMPROV Drama Class

June 12, 13,14

9:30 - 11 a.m. for grades 5-6

1 - 2:30 p.m. for grades 7-8

Join Mrs. Achs to work on your acting and improvisational skills. Students will participate in

activities similar to the TV show Whose Line is it Anyway for creative and fast thinking fun.

Activities will be videotaped and students can use the last part of each day to edit their favorite

clips to create a personalized video of their acting, including bloopers of course.

 

6th - 8th Grade Arduino and Raspberry Pi Robotics Coding

Instructor: Mr. Unruh

Description of Grove PI: Students will create an invention with the GrovePi Kit (and the

Raspberry Pi). After learning how to control the electronic devices and sensors in the kit with

Scratch coding, you can apply your knowledge to build many smart devices and control all

kinds of things.

Description of mBot: Bot is an all-in-one solution to enjoy the hands-on experience of

programming, electronics, and robotics. Working with mBlock inspired by Scratch 2.0,

connecting with computers or smart devices via Bluetooth or 2.4G (by different version), this

easy-to-assemble mBot provides infinite possibilities for you to learn STEM (Science,

Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).

 

7th - 9th Grade ETIQUETTE Class

June 28, 29, 30

Time: 9:30 – 11:30 except Friday will be from 10:00 (?) -1:45 (lunch in Davenport)

Middle School – cafeteria

Join Mrs. Achs, Mrs. Copeland, and Mrs. Wolf to learn how to behave in formal situations.

Students will go through the invitation/RSVP process, attire including how to tie a tie,

introductions, polite conversation, table manners, dancing the waltz, and ending with a thank

you note. After practicing for two days students will be invited to a 4-course dinner at Biaggi’s

with a dance to follow. They will be expected to dress appropriately --girls in a dress or skirt

and boys in a tie (we will have extra) and/or suit coat (if they have it).

 

7th - 12th Grade Starved Rock State Park Hike for 2 hours in Utica, IL

NOTE: A minimum of 5 participants is needed or the trip will be cancelled. Also, if there

is bad weather, the trip is cancelled with no rain date. Limit of 10 hikers. Meet up at EHS

at 9AM. Take activity bus to Utica. Arrive at park at 10:30, hike until approximately 1pm with

breaks. Lunch at lodge. Return to EHS at approximately 3:30–4pm. Recommended—

sunblock, bug spray, water, snack, backpack, walking shoes(no flip-flops or slides).

 

7th - 12th Grade Kayaking on the Mississippi through YMCA/Moline Sylvan Boathouse

NOTE: A minimum of 5 participants is needed or the trip will be cancelled. Also, if there

is bad weather, the trip is cancelled with no rain date. Limit of 10 kayakers. Meet up at

EHS at 10:30AM to take activity bus. Kayak for one hour. Lunch at TGIFridays. Return to

EHS at approximately 2PM. Recommended — sunblock, sunglasses, hat, towel, change of

clothes. flip flops or water shoes.

 

7th - 12th Grade Stand Up Paddle Board through YMCA/Sylvan Boathouse

NOTE: A minimum of 5 participants is needed or the trip will be cancelled. Also, if there

is bad weather, the trip is cancelled with no rain date. Limit of 10- paddlers. Meet up at

EHS at 10:30AM to take activity bus. Paddle for one hour. Lunch at TGIFridays. Return to

EHS at approximately 2PM. Recommended — sunblock, sunglasses, hat, towel, change of

clothes, flip flops.

 

7th - 9th Grade Chicago Museum Experience

The intent of this program is to expose students to the Museum of Science and Industry and

the Shedd Aquarium, located in Chicago. It will consist of a one extended day field trip, as

outlined below. Anticipated departure time is 6:00 a.m. from EMS and returning at 9:00

p.m.. The routing of the field trips may change due to the schedules set by the different

museums.

Field Trip Date: Tuesday, June 27th

Depart Middle School - 6:00 a.m.

Shedd Aquarium with Stingray Experience - 9:00 a.m.

Depart 11:30 a.m.

Museum of Science and Industry with Imax Experience, box lunch included - 11:45 a.m.

Depart 5:00 p.m.

Chicago Dog supper at Portillo’s, Forest Park - 5:45 p.m.

Return - 9:00 p.m.

 

7th - 10th Grade 3D Printing

June 13-15

10:30 a.m. - 12 :00 p.m.

EMS Room 22

Teachers: Mr. Unruh and Mr. McCullough

On June 15th we will be going to MIT (at Morrison) to visit with the professor in charge of 3D

printing. We will be stopping at Dairy Queen for lunch on the way home. Class will run longer

on this day. The length of this day is yet to be decided.

 

7th - 12th Grade 21st Century Digital Storytelling

June 13, 14, 15

1- 2:30 p.m.

HS Room 207 with Mr. Schlagheck

This summer enrichment program will delve into how media is created today. Using turnkey

studio equipment you will learn how to create and broadcast studio shows, live events and

whatever digital creation your imagination can come up with. We will cover studio

broadcasting, digital movie making, podcasting and digital photography. We will study how

professionals create their content and what techniques they use as well as explore the new

technology that is available. This includes drones for aerial photography and video,

professional studio equipment, green screens and digital photography and video equipment.
