Arbor Day Project- NHS and Erie Elementary Working Together

April 29, 2019

The NHS Arbor Day committee had a very busy week of April 22 - April 26. On Monday morning, April 22, the fourth graders went with the NHS members to the Lake Erie Country Club to plant trees. The students learned about the importance of replenishing trees in addition to the proper way to plant a tree and how to protect the tree with a chicken wire cage. The group managed to plant five pin oak trees before the thunderstorms started sprinkling and sent everyone running for the bus. Members of NHS went back that afternoon to continue to plant a total of 20 trees at the country club.

On Friday morning, April 26, the committee arrived at Erie Elementary to share information with the K-3rd graders. Each group was shown a video of the 4th graders planting a tree on Monday. Then there were craft activities and discussions about the importance of trees. Each group also went out into the yard to have NHS member Gunnar Wuebben instruct them on how to estimate the height of a tree. The second activity found the students making a circle in which some became trees, food, shelter, and space. Wuebben explained that without trees, the space (air) in which we live, would not be good for us to breathe and we would not have some foods (fruits and nuts). He then explained since wood came from trees, we would not have the supplies we needed to build our homes and that animals like squirrels and insects would not have a place to live either.

At the end of the hour, the NHS Arbor Day committee hoped that each student thought about the importance of trees, what they do for us, and why it is necessary to keep replenishing them.
